Pulling Teeth

Posted on February 16th, 2008 in Other Miami Sports by bstew

Lately, I feel like I am pulling teeth when trying to think of blog posts. The Dolphins cut a bunch of guys. The Heat lost more game. The Marlins are making progress to build a stadium that no one will go to for the same reason the Hurricanes moved out of because they felt not enough people went to games. The Panthers are two points out of the division lead and the third seed in the playoffs, but only because the Southeast conference is bad.

So, D. Wade is taking part in the skills competition tonight for the NBA Allstar weekend. He has won it two years in a row.

Alright, that’s all I got. Enjoy the weekend. We have no sports to watch anymore down here. It’s time to enjoy the great outdoors.

FAU:

FAU is playing in the New Orleans Bowl tonight against Memphis tonight. I say FAU takes this one. Memphis played pretty well in the past few years, but this season finished with a 7-5 record after playing nobody and escaping close games. Granted, FAU didn’t have the toughest of schedules either, but they should be heavily motivated to win this game.

And how can we not root for Schnell? This is the man that started it all at the University of Miami.

Zo:

Zo is out for the season, and likely his career. This injury hurts more than anybody in Miami aside from D. Wade or Jason Taylor. Zo is the heart and sole of this Heat team. In the only game I have seen live this season, Zo was the only player motivated to win throughout. I just hope this team can stick together despite this.

Panthers: The Panthers are finally above .500 and right in the mix for the post season!

Heat:

For the first time I’ve ever seen, a team will probably win a protest as the Heat will probably need to play against Atlanta since Wednesday night’s game will probably be abolished. With 51 seconds left in the game against the Hawks, Shaq was whistled for his fifth foul, but the scoring crew had it as his sixth. Apparently, there was a disputed foul with 3:24 left in the fourth in which Udonis hacked a Hawk, and even though the ref called Udonis for the foul, the scorers gave it to Shaq. Video evidence after the game showed that Udonis was clearly the fouler. Miami ended up tying to game and sending it to OT, after which they lost by six points.

By league rules, you must file a protest within 48 hours of the dispute, as well as pay $10,000 that is nonrefundable if you lose the challenge.

What is still unknown is how the Heat are so bad that they have lost to Atlanta twice in this still young season?

Sorry, I haven’t been in front of the computer much today, and Brody is still at the Orange Bowl, tied to midfield, protesting the demolition, four days after the final massacre. But here’s all the biggest Miami news from last night and this morning:

John Beck. If you haven’t heard this juicy nugget yet, then don’t claim yourself to be a ‘Phins fan anymore. After much studying of the players in action, Coach Cameron has decided to throw Beck into the fire for this weekend’s game against Philly.

What does this mean? We finally have a reason to watch the ‘Phins play this season! I’ve watched every down of every game this year, with hopes that we could finally pull off a miracle, but to not avail, obviously. Last week I posted about my hopes of Beck getting his first start against the Bills weak D for a little confidence boost, but maybe playing the tough D’s of Philly and Pittsburgh aren’t necessarily that bad. Okay, I’m trying to sugar coat things. But I’m very excited to see how this plays out.

And oh yeah, Miami is 0 for its last 9 in Philly. Super.

Florida Panthers. Wow, they really choked. Holding a 2-1 lead on a 6 on 4 with three seconds left, Atlanta tied the game up and then went on to win it in overtime. This was our fourth loss in a row, leaving us at 7-11-1 on the season. What seemed like a positive start four games ago, has officially gone down the shitter.

Miami Heat. Miami lost its third game in a row against the Bobcats, going back to last season, and this one was just plain ugly. I pray that you had something better to do with your time last night than sit through this game. Miami was outscored 31-12 in the third quarter, and ultimately lost the game 91-76.

Riley was quoted after the game saying "Maybe I should suit up…". He’s only a few years above the Heat’s average age, so this really doesn’t seem that far fetched to me.

Ricky Williams. Ricky was reinstated back into the NFL! Yep.

FIU vs. Miami Hurricanes Preview

First and foremost, don’t expect anything like the above incident to happen again tomorrow afternoon. Since the announcement eight months ago that Florida International University would once again face the University of Miami in the Orange Bowl, casual fans have marked September 15th on their calendar as a must-go-to game. These fans, there to see another brawl, will leave the stadium disappointed.

The only thing that will come out of this game is a good old-fashioned Miami Hurricane beat down. FIU has scored an average of 5 points per game this season, and FIU is one of two games Kyle Wright had success in last season. Expect the ‘Canes to come off a shaky performance last weekend, the receivers to have some breathing room, James and Coop to have holes that my grandmother could run through, and the defense to easily shut down the sub sub sub-par offense of FIU.

Miami 38 - FIU 6.

Go ‘Canes!

Miami FC is still alive in the playoff chase. What is Miami FC you ask? Well, its our very own 2nd rate soccer team. Well, if you count the MLS as first rate (and in America, we do).

Miami FC, where our mascot's head is ON FIRE!

Miami FC, our mascot’s head is on FI-YA!

The FC, as the cool kids call it, currently holds a 2 point advatage over the Charleston Battery (Jason Kidd recently signed to a 10 day contract) and the Carolina Railhawks (we can all safely assume “railhawks” means “vagabonds”).

Miami has played their last game of the season and needs the Jason Kidds and the Vagabonds to lose their remaining games to make it into the unrelenting excitement that is ; the USL Playoffs.

Just in case that didn’t wet your appetite for some South Florida Minor League Soccer action. Miami FC has their own “Miami FC Hotties”. Who’s uniforms consist of daisy dukes and cut t-shirts. Classy!

 Here are some samples:
