UM Basketball, Baby!
HUGE WIN! The ‘Canes just got a huge victory over Boston College. Why was this big? Let me count the ways:
1. It snapped a 13 game (I believe) losing streak the ‘Canes had against BC basketball.
2. Although not a must-win, this was a huge victory for our post-season (which I’ll explain below).
3. We overcame an 11 point second half deficit, and outscored the Eagles by 20 points in the second half (HUGE!)
We are seeing a different team than we have ever seen at the University of Miami. They are resilient, they are winning close games, and they are hustling.
Why was this big? Okay, I’ve always been a die hard all-things-Canes fan, but I’m not huge on college hoops… and since there are a lot of strange rules out there, I could be wrong on this. But from what I see, the ‘Canes are currently 8-7 in the ACC, one game behind Virginia Tech, who is 9-6, for the fourth spot in the ACC. Since we beat V-Tech a couple weeks back, we should have the tie-breaker for the fourth spot, should we both end up tied. Miami plays FSU on Saturday, definitely a winnable game, while V-Tech plays @ third ranked in the ACC Clemson on Sunday. I don’t like to depend on other teams to lose, especially when they will be highly motivated to win, but I think we sit in a good position here.
Why is this important?
Because in the ACC Championship Tournament, the top four seeds get a bye in the first round, which would automatically put us in the second round, which all but assures us a birth in the field of 64 (which I think we are in regardless). Should this happen, we will likely get V-Tech in the second round, whom we already beat on their soil. Then, well, then we would proibably face UNC, which I’m not too excited about, but who knows? Anything can happen.
Also, a word to the wise, the ‘Canes are still 100-1 to win the championship. Yes, it’s a long shot, but throw $10 down and you’ll have a cool $1k in the bank.
