Thus Ending a Decent Run.
I started writing this post with 10 minutes left in the game, while trailing Texas by about 18 points, so the tone of this will be different from the original message.
First of all, hats off the Hurricanes basketball. That team was picked by many to finish last place in the ACC, but ended up being one of only four ACC teams making it to the tournament. I can’t give enough praise to the overall season this team had.
Similarly, you have to love the job Coach Haith did with this team. The bottom line is that these guys aren’t that talented, and they are extremely inconsistent, so to get within three points of the Sweet 16 is astonishing.
That said, I can’t help but playing the "what if" game after we came back and only lost by three points.
What if the team didn’t get lazy from 10 minutes left in the first half to 5 minutes left in the game and played hard D and avoided stupid turnovers?
What if the ‘Canes put a hand up in those shooters’ faces ONE TIME so they missed just ONE MORE three pointer?
What if we didn’t drive to the lane on multiple occasions, only to throw the ball off the backboard and hope for the foul call?
What if, when down by three points with 1 second left, we didn’t throw a 90 yard pass, making it impossible to mathematically tie the game?
What if we didn’t have a couple starters who literally have not done one productive thing for the team all season?
What if? What if? What if?
If just one of these issues went our way, we are looking at a Stanford team this week that is certainly beatable. But as it is, we should be happy we made it this far, and look forward to the amazing talent we will be welcoming next year.
