UM Allegedly Revokes 6 Scholarships

Brody just passed along some wonderful news to me. From what Brody calls an extremely reliable source, we have learned that Miami has cut six scholarships of the students named below:

KIRBY
DALY
STEWART
C. JONES
FARR
MABRY

You know what? Randy Shannon is fighting for his job at this point. Next season is it. Why not get rid of the sluggish underperformers and get his new boys in there sooner? Also, Brody told me a lot of the Miami Northwestern boys are graduating a semester early, which could potentially mean they come to UM in the Spring of ‘08 to familiarize themselves with the campus and get some Spring practicing in.

Do we really have to wait ten months until football season begins again!?

[update: Most (if not all) of the players removed from the team, are graduating (or have already graduated). This is just a move to shore up roster space for players who have already attained a degree and aren’t performing on the field. Stupid, hippie freeloaders.]

Usually lacrosse equipment is easily available from the stores that deal with basketball equipment as well as that of golf and baseball. However where basketball things are more generic, golf clubs and lacrosse things are more specific and harder to find.

[…] Shannon is reinstating the Miami standard by revoking the salaries allegedly cutting six players’ scholarships from the team, including that of scatter-armed qb Kirby Freeman. Miami Sports Blog thinks it has something to do […]

What a testimony to Randy Shannon’s commitment to education. We’d hate to see incompetent players get a college degree. Perhaps their parents will scrape together the tuition for this vastly overpriced institution.

[…] It could be a difficult off-season for some Miami football players, as it’s being reported by Miami Sports Blog that six football players have had their scholarsh…, including the guy who started the season at quarterback. We’ll try to update this story from […]

To the Boss Cane’s credit, word is that all of these players have already received their degrees (or will in May)… they would have just been 5th year seniors or players who graduated in 3 years.

I enjoy your site, but I wish you guys had kept this one under your hat.

As fans of the program, you should know how outsiders use these types of rumors to re-inforce their stereotypes about the U. As members of the “new media,” you also know that once the sensational headline (UM “cuts” scholarships) hits the blogosphere, the details that surface later (the players had already graduated) tend not undo the damage.

I can appreciate the pressure when sitting on a scoop, but can’t you limit your reporting of rumors to those that make our program look good?

Don’t get me wrong, I am a big fan of investigative journalism, and I am glad that Sy Hersh didn’t sit on the illegal bombing of Cambodia. But when it comes to the U, I have no problem with propaganda.
