It doesn't make a difference where the World Cup is held, the only ones who can afford to watch a game (no cheaper than EU$800 for any Brazil game in 2006) could easily pay, and will pay, for a plane flight anywhere in the world. You might as well hold it in a place where the entire community appreciates the sport. Either way, this is all about money... who can make more money by hosting the event? Seriously, how many Americans will actually watch a game? While people have national holidays in soccer-loving countries when their team is playing, most of the population in the United States doesn't even know their goalkeeper's name.
Also, very clever with the "indoor plumbing" comment. It's easy to pinpoint an ignorant sheltered American when you read their nonsense.

We looked very good in the under 20s, I'm not sure how well we'll do overall though. Our current crop of kids is the best we've ever had (easy to tell because they all didn't come from Ivy leagues and near Ivies) as far as natural talent, but you have to wonder how many we lose to football, baseball, basketball, and hockey. It's the same ol' argument but it remains true, Europe and Africa get their best athletes into one sport. We split them up four ways and then leave the left overs to be split amongst soccer, lacrosse, and all the other sports for mildly athletic middle-class white kids.
